CREATE: Start your own food business

CREATE 2015 Applications Open

Application form is available here.

In 2014, the Lambeth Food Partnership launched CREATE – a programme to support local food start-ups. Thirty budding entrepreneurs were selected and participated in six sessions, running from September to November. The group heard from experts on a range of key issues, including: business planning, food safety, branding & marketing, premises, sourcing ingredients, sustainability and more. They also had the opportunity to pitch their food and business ideas to a panel of industry experts for feedback and advice. Many of our start-ups have now taken the leap and are turning their fledgling ideas into thriving local enterprises.

The programme will be running again in 2015. Details on how to apply will be available soon.

Why are we doing this?

We have a fantastic range of food businesses in Lambeth, with vibrant local restaurant scenes, thriving markets, innovative producers and a wonderful variety of foods on offer.

However, the reality is that we spend £570m per year on food in the borough and the majority still goes to supermarket chains. The Lambeth Food Partnership would like to see more of that money being spent with local businesses; we know that small independents employ more people and are more likely to use local services and suppliers. We also believe that local food businesses have a vital role to play in tackling the health and sustainability challenges we face.

But starting a business can be a daunting task and food enterprises are particularly prone to failure. By hearing from people with years of experience, CREATE gives start-ups the opportunity to learn how to avoid some of the common pitfalls – and what it takes to succeed and thrive.

CREATE has been developed to build on the success of the ‘So You Want To Start Your Own Food Business?’ sessions that were run in Brixton and West Norwood in 2012 and 2013. The content has been developed in partnership with Lambeth’s Enterprise Team, drawing on the skills, expertise and time of a wide variety of established food entrepreneurs, industry experts and business advisors. The programme is funded by Lambeth Council to run over three years.
